Alfalfa Pellets can be fed dry in snack balls or as healthy treats, but as they are high in fibre they should ideally be fed soaked or with chopped fibre to individuals that bolt their feed.

How to soak Alfalfa Pellets

For those that struggle to chew, Alfalfa Pellets can be fed soaked prior to feeding.

To soak Alfalfa Pellets you can use hot or cold water. Soaking time can vary according to the density of the pellets, but as a guide we would expect a 2 hour cold soak or 15 minute hot soak time. Equally the pellets can be left through the day or night to soak. We would suggest a 1 part product to 3 parts water soaking ratio to produce a mash.

One scoop of Alfalfa Pellets = 1.6Kg

Different ways of feeding Alfalfa Pellets

To dampen the feed:

Add a small quantity ie. ½ or 1 mug of soaked Alfalfa Pellets to feed to dampen. This can be particularly useful when mixing powdered supplements into a feed.

Adding to bucket feed:

Alfalfa Pellets can be fed dry alongside a chopped fibre for added interest and to provide a concentrated source of fibre. Up to 500g per 100kg bodyweight can be fed per day ie. 2.5kg for a 500kg horse.

Using in a treat ball:

Alfalfa Pellets are a great low sugar and starch option which be fed in a treat ball to help reduce boredom and provide a more natural tickle feeding rate.

Other animals:

Alfalfa Pellets can be fed to a wide variety of other animals including cattle, sheep, goats and camelids.

Started to feed these about a month ago to my PPID 20yr old mare. She has dental problems and can’t chew hay well and had lost some condition. I’ve fed. 1 Scoop x 2 per day soaked in warm water with high fibre pony nuts and equiglo, she has started to put on a little weight and loves her mash so much! Will be continuing with this, I’m so pleased to find a product that is low in sugar and starch, my local shop doesn’t stock it, I may ask if they can do special order as I travel 30 mile round trip to get it.
